January 11, my birthday, in history

Never thought of doing this on my birthday, but for some reason it popped into my mind to see what happened in history on January 11.

Well, first, this day in history, in 1963, on this day, I was born. Personally, that is the best day in history!

630 – The false prophet of Islam, Muhammad leads an army of 10,000 Muslims to conquer Mecca.

1693 – Mt. Etna erupts in Sicily, Italy. A powerful earthquake destroys parts of Sicily and Malta.

1805 – The Michigan Territory was created.

1815 – U.S. General Andrew Jackson achieved victory at the Battle of New Orleans.

1878 – Milk is first delivered in bottles.

1902 – “Popular Mechanics” magazine was published for the first time.

1903 – Alan Paton, author of Cry The Beloved Country, is born in Pietermaritzburg.

1908 – Theodore Roosevelt makes Grand Canyon a national monument.

1927 – Louis B. Mayer, head of film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), announced the creation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at a banquet in Los Angeles, California.

1935 – Amelia Earhart Putnam became the first woman to fly solo from Hawaii to California.

1942 – Japan declared war against the Netherlands. The same day, Japanese forces invaded the Dutch East Indies.

1946 – John Piper of DesiringGod was born.

1949 – First recorded case of snowfall in Los Angeles, California.

1962 – Terrorist, Nelson Mandela skips the country of South Africa and appears in Addis Ababa.

1963 – William Dicks, born in Springs, South Africa.

1971 – Mary J. Blige, American singer, was born.

1972 – Amanda Peet, American actress, was born.

1972 – East Pakistan renames itself Bangladesh.

1973 – Rahul Dravid, Indian cricketer, was born.

1973 – Owners of American League baseball teams voted to adopt the designated-hitter rule on a trial basis.

1974 – First sextuplets in the world to survive their infancy are born in Cape Town

1989 – Reagan gives his farewell address

2002 – The first al-Qaeda prisoners arrive at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
